The Helium Comedy Academy is an ongoing monthly class which focuses on developing and honing a range of skills in various comedic disciplines including stand-up, improv, and sketch.

Our philosophy in teaching comedy is understanding that training is essential. It's a craft similar and not unlike any dance, theatre or vocal program. There's a foundation that can be learned which will expedite one's success. Ongoing workshops are for everyone. Beginner to advanced.

With his place cemented as one of the true legends of comedy, comedian Bruce Bruce continues his career as one of the best in his craft. With a recognizable name and an impressive reputation, Bruce’s steady style of comedy has been showcased across the country – on stage, on TV, in film, and on the written page. His wit, ability to improv, and infectious personality set him apart from other standup comedians. Although known for his adult comedy, Bruce prides himself on not using vulgarity to win a laugh. He is no stranger to winning over new audiences - young, old, from all backgrounds - with every appearance he makes.

Bruce is one of the nation’s favorite standup comedians and most recently was seen on Bert Kreischer’s Fully Loaded Tour”, "LIT AF Tour" with Martin Lawrence, "The Real Mike Epps Tour,” and the “Royal Comedy Tour” with Sommore. When not on tour, Bruce can be found performing at premiere comedy clubs across the United States. He is also featured on the Netflix original comedy series “Family Reunion” as "Brother Davis", a hilarious foil for Loretta Devine's character. He is shooting his Netflix Special this May in Chicago and is due out in the fall of 2025. Bruce has also been making appearances on national podcasts including, “Club Shay Shay,” with Shannon Sharpe, “85 South Podcast,” with DC Youngfly, Chico Bean, Karlos Miller, and “Net Positive” with John Crist.

On the feature film front, Bruce has made cameos in Ice Cube’s “XXX: State of the Union”, “Idlewild,” and “Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector.” He also appeared in the Steve Harvey comedy “Think Like a Man,” the Chris Rock- directed, “Top Five,” and most recently in "The Trap," "Undercover Brother 2," and “Miracles Across 125th Street” with Nick Cannon.

In addition to standup comedy, film, and TV, Bruce Bruce can also add an author to his list of credits. Penguin Publishing released Bruce’s first memoir Baby James Brown, which regales its readers with hilarious stories from his childhood and experiences that shaped Bruce Bruce into the comedian he is today.

Bruce’s comedy can be traced back to when he was working as a chef directly out of high school, entertaining his customers with his humor while cooking up mean BBQ dishes. He then worked as a Frito-Lay salesman and managed to get hired to do standup comedy sets for their corporate meetings. Eventually, Bruce brought his comedy routine to the Comedy Act Theater in Atlanta, where he instantly became an audience favorite. When BET’s “Coast to Coast” came to town searching for talented up-and coming comedians, Bruce was selected and ultimately appeared on the show three times. His career skyrocketed from there. In 1993, Bruce made his first appearance on HBO’s “Def Comedy Jam”; followed quickly by an impressive appearance on the “Showtime at the Apollo.” BET executives noticed and signed him on as host for two seasons of “Comic View”, and then as host of the popular comedian competition show on BET “Coming to the Stage.” Bruce’s bigger than life personality has transcended onto the music scene as well. He has made guest appearances in music videos with Ludacris and the Ying Yang Twins (after being named in their hit song “Salt Shaker”), Quad City DJ’s “Come On Ride the Train (Ride It)”and Outkast’s “So Fresh, So Clean.” Most recently, Bruce appeared in the KEM music video, “You’re On My Mind.”

With great skill, Bruce easily weaves real life situations into comedic stories. He is a frequent guest on national radio shows and podcasts, including Kevin Hart’s “Comedy Gold Minds”, Marc Maron’s “WTF,” “85 South Show,” with DC Young Fly, and Netflix’s “Strong Black Lead.” Bruce’s memorable comedy festival appearances include the prestigious, Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in both Chicago and Montreal, Laffapalooza in Atlanta, GA, and the US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, CO.

When not performing, Bruce spends his time at home with his extended family in Atlanta. He is also extremely dedicated to his impressive car collection, which boasts two Harley Davidson trucks and four Buick muscle cars, among many others.

Pat Burtscher was born in Austria via a Greek woman raised in Canada and is currently based in NYC where he's a regular at The Comedy Cellar and other cool places. He also headlines clubs and does festivals all around the world (JFL, Edinburgh, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, New York Comedy Festival, and other cool stuff). Martin Phillips

Native Metro Detroiter, Joe Dombrowski took the world by storm in 2017 with a viral April Fools’ Day spelling test prank that landed him multiple appearances on the Ellen DeGeneres show. Don't get it twisted though! It takes at least 20 years to be an overnight sensation! Joe has been doing stand up comedy since he was eight years old in his third grade talent show. He's never stopped! Since Joe rise to fame, he has been traveling the globe with his stand-up comedy which often highlights his outrageous family dynamics and of course his time as a former elementary school teacher. Joe has been featured as a headlining act at the Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal, The New York comedy festival and the Netflix Is a Joke Fest. Joe is also incredibly humbled to be hosting a monthly show at the world famous Comedy Story in Los Angeles. When he’s not getting creative on stages and screens, Joe spends his time in Seattle, Washington producing his podcast “Social Studies” with his good friend and high school history teacher, Gaspare Randazzo, where they recap outlandish stories from fans all over the country.

After starting his career in Cape Town, South Africa Joey Avery made a name for himself in the Bay Area comedy scene quickly earning recognition in the SF Chronicle as one of San Francisco's Comics on the Rise. Avery followed that up by releasing a joint, debut comedy album entitled JUNIOR VARSITY which debuted at #1 on iTunes. Ian Bagg is a world-touring comedian whose comedy was recently described as "dangerously flawless" on the JRE. But he is not just a comedian he is also the cohost of the weekly hockey podcast, "Enjoying Orange Slices with Jeff and Ian." 

Early in his life, he discovered a love for hockey. Whether he was involved in minor, junior, pro, or friends getting together to play shinny, he loved hockey! He went to some camps and was cut, realizing he had no chance of making the pros. He knew it was time to use his natural talent to make people laugh.

Calvin Evans is a standup/actor/writer from Chicago. His recent television credits include a recurring role on Comedy Central’s SOUTHSIDE, the Fox series APB, NBC’s CHICAGO PD, and Showtime’s SHAMELESS. He has also performed his standup on the Kevin Hart Comedy Central series HART OF THE CITY and MTV’s ACTING OUT. Calvin was a featured performer at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal this past summer. He was the winner of the WGN Chicago’s next big comic contest and was a featured performer at NBC’s Breakout Comedy Festival. Calvin was also a featured performer at Chicago’s Just For Laughs Festival. He performs standup across the country and is a regular performer at several of Chicago’s top comedy clubs including The Laugh Factory, Up Comedy Club, and Zanies. Calvin is a graduate of the Second City Chicago Conservatory and is a Bob Curry Fellowship recipient. Calvin was a New Face at the 2017 Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal.

Pedro Gonzalez is a NY-based comedian born in Colombia. Pedro is a zero-generation immigrant, which means he came to the U.S. as a teenager with zero English and zero money. He ended up receiving a Masters Degree in English at UCLA. In 2020 he made his late-night television debut on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and now, he’s a story editor on Mike Schur’s new comedy PRIMO (Freevee/Universal Television). Alabama native, Waffle House enthusiast and stand-up comedian Derrick Stroup is not your average slow talking Southerner. Now a massive star in Ireland, native New Yorker Des Bishop moved from Queens to Ireland in his mid-teens in 1990. He first came to prominence with his extraordinary TV series "The Des Bishop Work Experience" (2004), where he lived on minimum wage in a series of different jobs in Ireland. Mixing this documentary footage with stand-up, the series became one of the most talked-about of the year, propelling. Des into national stardom. In 2006, he embarked on his second critically acclaimed TV series, "Joy In The Hood," where he taught stand-up comedy in disadvantaged areas in four major Irish cities. Author, columnist, and comedian Steve Hofstetter is often called the hardest working man in show-business. With all due respect to the late James Brown.

Hofstetter's national TV debut came on ESPN's Quite Frankly, where Stephen A. Smith yelled at him for three minutes. Hofstetter has also appeared on CBS' "Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson", Showtime's "White Boyz in the Hood", VH1's "Countdown", Sundance's "On the Road in America", and ABC's "Barbara Walter's Special", where he thankfully did not cry. He is the host and executive producer of "Laughs" on Fox networks, where he only cries occasionally.

After serving 5 years in the JROTC, Sahib Singh has not only proven himself on the battlegrounds, but also on the stage. The rising star from the Baltimore/D.C. stand-up scene has performed at clubs and colleges across the country, and in 2019, he won the Magooby’s New Comedian of the Year competition. His original videos have earned him a strong following on social media, and in 2021 he worked as a writer and performer for Comedy Central. Corey Bonalewicz, aka COREY B, is an American radio personality, comedian, and content creator based in New York. Corey B has been working in Radio for over ten years. He got his start in New Orleans and has hosted radio shows in Chicago and New York. Prior to the pandemic, Corey performed stand up in the New York comedy club circuit and was planning on touring. Corey shifted his focus to long form content during the pandemic which showcased his comedic style on top of food hacks. He has amassed over 9M followers on TikTok and almost 6M followers on Facebook. He is releasing his own BBQ sauce and has equity in a New York restaurant and cookie company. Corey co-hosts a podcast, Cane and Corey, which is currently behind a paywall. Caleb Elliott is a comedian, writer and actor from North Carolina. He has been performing stand up since he was 11 years old. He started his comedy career at Goodnights Comedy Club and first opened for Bill Bellamy at age 14. Caleb has worked with comedians such as Tracey Morgan, Ralphie May, Donnell Rawlings and in 2019 had the pleasure of touring with the legendary comedian Sinbad. In 2020 he became the youngest comic to release a Dry Bar Comedy Special, “Diary of a Smooth Black Kid.” In 2021 he released a comedy extended playlist “Humorous Interpretation” on Sirius XM and Laugh USA. Karen Mills is a stand-up comedian with 30 years experience. Known for her sharp wit and relatable topics, this Tennessee girl has performed on the iconic stage of the Grand Ole Opry and toured alongside comedy sensation Leanne Morgan. Karen recently appeared on the daytime show “The Talk.”

Karen’s Dry Bar Comedy special “Baby Got Bad Back” has gotten over 35 million views, and she was featured in a comedy special produced by Nate Bargatze called "The Showcase." Karen can be heard regularly on Sirius/XM comedy channels.

This self-proclaimed “crazy dog lady” has a straight-forward approach to the realities of life. Billy Gardell currently stars in the CBS series Bob Hearts Abishola, from award-winning creator, executive producer and writer Chuck Lorre. Bob Hearts Abishola is a love story about a middle aged compression sock businessman from Detroit who unexpectedly falls for his cardiac nurse,
